On Sunday, May 11, 2025, the Corail Noir team stepped out of the hotel grounds and onto the sand of Ambondrona beach for an activity that reflects our values: protecting the natural environment of Nosy Be through concrete action. This community beach cleanup was not a one-time gesture, but part of a long-term vision rooted in sustainability and respect for marine ecosystems.
The rainy season in Nosy Be brings lush vegetation and vibrant colours, but it also leaves a less visible consequence: an increase in debris along the coastline. Rubbish from inland areas is carried by rivers and runoff, eventually reaching the beaches where tides deposit additional waste brought in from the open sea.
During our cleanup, we collected a large number of plastic bags, bottles, cans, and other assorted waste materials. This experience only strengthened our conviction that the best solution lies in preventing pollution at its source.
This is one reason why we have long chosen to serve only filtered water in our restaurant at Corail Noir. By avoiding plastic bottles altogether, we drastically reduce our plastic footprint, and we invite our guests to join us in this low-waste approach.
This cleanup was not just a staff initiative. Several curious and motivated children from the nearby village of Ambaro joined the effort, along with some local residents. Their presence was a highlight of the day, reminding us that sustainability is also about education and community involvement.
Picking up trash is a simple act, but for the children, it was also a learning experience — an opportunity to better understand the impact of human actions on nature, and to feel responsible for their surroundings.
These are the moments that make a difference: when people of different generations and backgrounds come together for a common cause.
Our beach cleaning event is aligned with the environmental efforts recognised by the Blue Oceans label, which has been awarded to our diving center, Aqua Diving Madagascar. This certification supports operators who take tangible steps to preserve marine biodiversity, reduce pollution, and promote sustainable tourism.
We’re proud to be part of this network and to apply these principles not only under the sea, but also on land — starting with the beach just steps away from our bungalows.
At Corail Noir, we believe that each action counts. That’s why we regularly organise beach cleanup sessions and other environmental initiatives throughout the year.
Whether you are a hotel guest, a diver at Aqua Madagascar, or simply visiting Nosy Be, you are warmly invited to take part in our future events. It’s an opportunity to connect with the local environment, learn from the community, and contribute to a cleaner, healthier coastline.
