plage privée hotel nosy be le corail noir

Caring for the planet and its teams

The Corail Noir hotel, part of the AMANTA hotel group, shares the same ambitious environmental approach as all of its establishments.

A short-supply chain hotel

The Corail Noir restaurant prioritises local produce from Nosy Be and Madagascar: fruit, vegetables, cereals, meat and fish. The menu varies every day and adapts to fluctuations in harvests and seasonality. Our chefs serve fresh, locally sourced produce and always offer vegetarian dishes on the menu.

The restaurant aims to promote zero-kilometre food: we have recruited two additional market gardeners whose job is to create and maintain a large vegetable garden. This means that we produce some of our own fruit, vegetables and herbs locally. We grow courgettes, cucumbers, lettuce, greens, tomatoes, aubergines, pineapples, papayas, cassava, potatoes, watermelons, bananas and chillies, as well as herbs such as sage, basil and parsley.

As with the maintenance of the hotel garden, crops are grown in a sustainable manner, avoiding the use of chemicals. Compost naturally feeds the vegetable garden while making use of our organic waste.

Elimination of chemicals

Our cleaning products are chosen for their low environmental impact. In general, and as far as possible, our hygiene and cleaning products are sourced with respect for our unique environment, always favouring local products over imported ones.

Respect and promotion of terrestrial biodiversity

Our tropical garden is rich in a wide variety of plants. We are committed to promoting this biodiversity and offer our guests the opportunity to discover the ecology and uses of the species in a small booklet (available free of charge at reception) to accompany them along our botanical trail.

A booklet presenting the fauna is also available to help you discover the birds and reptiles in our garden. Our local guides are always available to introduce the flora and fauna to guests who are keen to learn more! During our excursions, we make sure to raise our guests’ awareness of the importance of respecting species by emphasising good practices to avoid disturbing them.

Respect for marine biodiversity and scientific partnerships

We offer guests several sea excursions and infographics to help them discover the incredible marine biodiversity of Nosy Be: cetaceans, sea turtles, rays, century-old coral reefs, multicoloured tropical fish, etc.

We have built a partnership with the Madagascar SharkWhale Project (MSWP) foundation, which is responsible for the protection of marine mammals and whale sharks in Madagascar.

All our sailors, divers and guides have received three days of theoretical and practical training on best practices at sea for respecting cetaceans, sea turtles and whale sharks. With this training, our teams are better able to show you the extraordinary marine biodiversity found in the waters of Nosy Be and how to preserve it.

The AQUA DIVING nautical centre has been awarded the BLUE OCEANS SSI label, which demonstrates its respect and commitment to the environment.

Coral restoration project

With the support of the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF), we have built a partnership with the KORAI association. The KORAI association works to promote, preserve and restore coral reefs in the Indian Ocean, particularly in Madagascar.

In collaboration with these coral reef experts, we are launching our coral restoration project on the island of Sakatia, located opposite our hotel. We are working with fishermen and local communities to better understand the conservation issues and pressures facing the reefs (warming waters, sedimentation, plastic and chemical pollution, etc.).

Follow our news to find out more about this coral restoration project: what we are doing, how we are doing it and the results of our work! Please do not hesitate to contact us to meet the team in charge of the project!

A zero-waste hotel by 2025

The infrastructure on the island of Nosy Be does not currently have the capacity to collect, sort and treat waste, particularly that produced by hotels and restaurants. The Corail Noir hotel wants to reduce waste at source in order to reduce its environmental impact.

We are gradually eliminating waste by:

  • Choosing large packaging or bulk purchases as a priority
  • By offering high-quality filtered water to eliminate plastic bottles (osmosis filtration system supplier: GAIA Energie)
  • By gradually eliminating all individual packaging (straws, tea, coffee, sugar, salt, pepper, jam, soap and shampoo, etc.).

All of the establishment’s services and employees are therefore involved in finding new solutions and adapting practices.

Energy and water

We are gradually replacing our outdoor lighting with solar lamps, which reduce our energy consumption. In addition, our photovoltaic installation provides the establishment with 20% of the energy it consumes.

We are raising awareness among our employees and customers about energy-saving practices: systematically turning off lights, air conditioning and appliances left on standby, limiting water use, etc.

A hotel rooted in its local area

The hotel promotes the rich culture of Madagascar: showcasing Madagascan crafts in the décor, promoting Madagascan products in the shop, organising cultural evenings and Madagascan dances with a buffet of local specialities, etc.

In addition, the hotel supports the AMADA and Giovanna per il Madagascar Onlus associations in Madagascar, which work for the well-being of the population (health, education, environment). Our staff invite each guest to join the efforts undertaken, to discover the activities carried out by these associations and to contribute financially or materially to the missions in progress.
