Hôtel Corail Noir Welcomes the MIHARY Network to Its Coral Restoration Site
On Wednesday, July 29th, Hôtel Corail Noir was delighted to welcome more than 40 people from the MIHARY network, in collaboration with our partner dive centre Aqua Diving and the Koraï association. The morning’s programme: a visit to our coral restoration site, located off the coast of Sakatia.
The MIHARY Network: Communities Whose Lives Depend on the Lagoon
The MIHARY network brings together coastal communities from Nosy Be and across Madagascar — fishers, fish traders, local associations — for whom the health of coral reefs directly shapes daily life and livelihoods. By welcoming them to our site, our aim was to share, in very concrete terms, the work being carried out to protect this essential resource.
Why Restore Coral Reefs?
Coral reefs are far more than scenery for our guests and divers: they are true ecological pillars. They shelter unique marine biodiversity, serve as breeding grounds for many fish species, and naturally protect our beaches from erosion. When a reef is degraded, natural regeneration can take decades. Coral restoration speeds up this process by transplanting healthy coral fragments onto submerged structures, where they can grow before eventually strengthening the natural reef.
120 Structures, Over 5,000 Coral Fragments
Our visitors were able to see the scale of this work first-hand: 120 submerged structures, each holding 42 coral fragments, for a total of over 5,000 fragments currently growing off the coast of Sakatia. This demonstration explained the fragment-transplanting techniques and the monitoring in place to support coral recovery.
A Project Supported by the CEPF
This restoration work is supported by the CEPF (Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund), which backs conservation initiatives in areas of high ecological value.
We warmly thank everyone who joined us to share this morning. For Hôtel Corail Noir, these encounters illustrate a conviction we hold close: a successful stay also depends on preserving the lagoon that makes our destination so rich.
